Holiday Safety Tips

If you enjoy celebrating the holidays here are a few tips to keep your home safe during this festive time of the year.

1. Visible gift displays
Although it seems like a fun idea to have little piles of presents surrounding your Christmas tree, it's important to keep presents out of view from windows and doors. Having a display of gifts visible from outside of your home can put your home at risk of burglary. Police are unlikely to track down thieves to find your gifts. It's a better idea to keep presents out of site until you are ready to give them.

2. Keep your fresh tree watered
Don't buy a tree if the needles fall off easily, this is a sign that it's dry. Make sure to water your tree daily to keep it as fresh as possible. Placing a tree ne
ar any heat sources, under tree lights, or by a window will cause a tree to dry out more quickly.

3. Decorative lights
Always inspect your lights and make sure there aren't any loose or broken lights. Never leave your lights on unattended. Use lights that are tested in a nationally-recognized lab, like Underwriters Laboratory(UL) because they emit less power/heat and aren't as much of a fire risk if used properly.

4. Outdoor decorative lights
Prevent your light displays from over
heating by not plugging in all your lights together and overloading a single electrical outlet. Never attach more than three strands of lights together. Always use lights that are certified for outside use.
