8 Easy Changes to Make Your New House Feel Like Home

After months of house hunting, you've found your dream home. But now that you've moved in, it feels big, empty and not very homey at all. Don't panic! It doesn't mean you chose the wrong house. You just need to make some quick changes to make your new house feel like home.

At AM/PM Insurance Agency, our foremost concern is always protecting your home. However, we also understand the need to feel at home, and we invite you to consider these tips to help you and your family settle into your new space.

Organize the Cupboards

Nothing makes you feel out of sorts quite like not being able to find what you need. Resist the urge to toss things haphazardly into cupboards and instead organize your cabinets and closets as you unpack. When your plates are where you expect them to be, and your clothes neatly put away, you gain a sense of routine that makes you feel at home.

Quarantine Unpacked Boxes

No one enjoys living in a sea of boxes, but at the same time, trying to unpack in a day is an overwhelming and impossible task. Rather than leaving unpacked boxes littered throughout your new home, store low-priority boxes in a spare room until you're ready to tackle them. Just don't put it off forever — if your guest room is stacked high with boxes, you'll never truly feel settled in.

Set Up the Bedrooms

Even if the rest of your home looks like a disaster zone, you should at least have a cozy place to sleep at night. Before you worry about arranging the living room furniture or decorating the bathrooms, set up each family member's bedroom. When the beds are made, dressers full of clothes, and favorite decorations artfully arranged, it's much easier to settle down for a good night's rest.

Hang Artwork

Bare walls feel sterile. Bring life into your home by hanging your favorite artwork and family photos. If you're not sure where you want to place artwork long-term, use House Beautiful's suggestions for hanging artwork without putting nails in the walls.

Buy Curtains

Few things are as uncomfortable as having your life on display to the entire neighborhood. Measure the windows and go shopping for window treatments. As you weigh the options, consider both appearance and function since curtain materials impact how light, noise and temperature filter into a room.

Make Your Space Inviting

It’s easy for clutter to grow in our homes, and it becomes more evident before a big move. Once you get into your new house, however, prepare a plan of attack for clutter and grime so you can keep the positive vibes flowing. Consider the feng shui method as you unpack, and be sure to clean each room as you go.

Give Pets a Place

Your pets want to feel at home in your new abode, too. Get litter boxes, food and water dishes, and pet beds set up as soon as possible to ease your pet's nerves after the big move. If you have an anxious dog or cat, you may want to keep your pet in a secluded area of the home for a few days until it's feeling more comfortable.

Add or Remove Humidity

Indoor air quality has a big impact on your comfort at home. If your allergies are flaring up after moving in, there may be excess humidity indoors. On the other hand, if your skin feels dry and your throat itchy, it could be a sign you need a humidifier to combat low humidity. According to Apartment Therapy, ideal indoor humidity is around 45 percent.

Fully adjusting to a new home can take a few weeks to a few months. It isn't until your home is filled with the familiar smells, sounds and routines that it really starts to feel like yours. But that doesn't mean you have to feel like an awkward houseguest in the meantime. Knock these tasks off your to-do list in the first week, and your house will start feeling more like home with each passing day.
